Shagya-Araber: elegance + Stamina

Welcome to New-Moon Stud, Australia’s home to Shagya-Araber horses.

Renowned for their stamina, courage, heart and effortless agility, these noble sport horses blend the grace of the Arabian with the build and power of European warmblood breeds.

A medium-sized horse (15.1hh to 16.1hh), the Shagya-Araber has been used extensively in the development of many modern warmblood breeds and is competitive across a range of disciplines including eventing, jumping, dressage and carriage.  The breed excels in the sport of endurance and has claimed the podium at most of the world’s iconic endurance championships, including the Tevis Cup in the USA, as well as World and European Championships held at Euston Park, Florac, Compeigne and elsewhere.

Initially developed for light cavalry by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 18th century, the breed has been refined and perfected over centuries to produce the blend of conformation, performance and character evident today

Shagya-Arabers are not just superb athletes, but true companions with kind, willing and trainable natures.

Our Stud

New-Moon is a specialist breeder of Shagya-Araber horses,
building on licensed and performance-tested bloodlines imported from prominent European Studs.

Testimonials

Diane Graham, Victoria

I recently purchased the Shagya-Araber stallion, New-Moon Orion, from Rebecca Hogan.  I couldn’t be more pleased with my stallion – his temperament is fabulous.  I am 72 yrs and need a stallion I can trust and that’s definitely this boy.  Even the transport guy commented on his temperament.  I 100% trust Rebecca and the Shagya-Araber temperament.

Purchased a 2yo unbroken Trakhener gelding New-Moon Leopold ‘sight unseen’ due to living interstate, yet had the utmost confidence in what we were purchasing as Bec from New-Moon Stud was very accommodating and honest in the way she communicated with us.

Two years on, NM Leopold was broken in and started at home by our 12yo daughter (with some help from mum and dad).  He showed no sign of ‘dirty’ behaviour when being backed and was always willing to please.  Leo has three excellent paces, is well conformed and we have been very impressed by the quiet, obliging and trainable nature Leo demonstrates day to day.  He has had several dressage, showjumping and cross country outings and continued to demonstrate a calm, relaxed demeanor around other horse both in arenas and open xc paddocks.

If all the young stock being produced at New-Moon Stud are as confident, well conformed and obliging as New-Moon Leopold has been for us, we would certainly have no hesitation in recommending Bec and Darren from New-Moon Stud to potential purchasers.  We will certainly be watching their young stock for future purchases.

I have the privilege of owning New-Moon Sofia and New-Moon Marius.  The magic of these horses is not only their breeding, but that Bec allows them time to develop naturally into sound horses.  My horses are on 230 acres with other horses and don’t need me for anything.  Yet I can go with my horse gear to the paddock and they come to me freely.  I have worked with them in strong winds, electrical storms and other horses galloping around.  They are completely sound under all conditions.  I am the type of person who will only have the best or nothing at all, and that is the type of horse you will get from Bec Hogan’s New-Moon Stud.

Our Story

Owned and managed by Rebecca and Darren Hogan, New-Moon Stud started with three imported mares, a colt imported in-utero, and a bank of imported semen from approved and performance-tested international stallions.

Today, our stud has a young stallion, two senior mares, and seven young mares and fillies to continue the original lines.  In 2020, New-Moon Stud was awarded ‘Best Breeding Program’ on the Australian All Breeds Tour by International Breed Judge (Zuchtricher FN), Frank Weisskirchen from Germany.  Our horses are routinely inspected and licensed for listing in the International Trakehner Verband studbook, such that our mares are eligible to be used in the breeding of Trakehner horses.
